How to fix a curtain rod that falls apart. This has got to be one of the most annoying problems in the world to a short person:

Argggh! Now I gotta get out a stool and put the stupid curtain rod back together only so it can fall apart again next time.

Yeah, I already tried to tighten the screws on the bracket to hold the rod in place. I am always asking Xaver to check the rods to see what is wrong. I thought about Krazy Glue… but what if I want to move the rod? The rod slides out of the brackets on the side and the screws that are supposed to keep the rod in place fall out, get stripped, or just don't seem up to the task. So the curtain rod slides out the side, the middle comes apart, the curtain falls off. All I wanted was to open the window?!?! And if I ask Matthew to open the curtains – well, I usually come back to find the rod hanging there and the curtain panel in a pile on the floor.

I just kind of lived with this, dragging out that step stool every coulpe days to fix the curtain rod YET AGAIN. And it wasn't isolated to just one rod or one brand – all of my curtains seemed to have this issue at one point or another. I seriously considered mini blinds again…

Then one day, it hit me.

Rubber bands! If I put a rubber band on the rod, between the middle of the rod and the bracket, when I slide the curtain open, the rubberband would catch on the bracket and stop the rod from moving outwards any more. That is what the problem was – the rod slide outwards on either side when I slide the curtain to open them. The rod would separate in the middle and then everything would fall apart.

But where can you find black rubber bands? I looked in my office supplies drawer — only pink and blue rubber bands with a few thick green broccoli rubber bands. That is a No-Go for cure! I look online and all the websites I found wanted to sell me HUGE packs of all black rubber bands for alot of money and a big shipping charge. And who needs 5o00 black rubber bands? I only needed a few… I needed a quick, cheap, practical solution…

 Enter the Rainbow Loom!

I found these beauties on Amazon and knew they would be perfect. The kids wanted a Rainbow Loom anyways so I could justify buying the multi-color pack because the value was so great …

You can find the bands in black, silver, brown, or whatever color you need to match your curtain rod. I just got a multi-pack to be on the safe side since I have curtain rods in black, copper, brown, and silver.

Here's what to do:

1. Take the rod off the brackets.

2. Thread the rainbow loom band onto the rod, doubling it if you have to, depending on the diameter (thickness) of the curtain rod.

3. Insert the rod back into the bracket. Make sure the bracket is between the rubber-band and the finial end of the rod).

4. Once you like where everything is positioned, put the curtain back on the rod and hang.

I have these curtains on two windows in my dining room – I did this rubber band treatment to one and the rod is exactly where I placed it a week ago. The other curtain looks kind of like the one in my first photo – the rod is CRAZY looking! I'm getting out the step stool to put rubber-bands on that curtain rod TODAY!

I hope this helps you solve a curtain dilemma in your home ;)

  1. You know, sometimes you see an idea someone shares and you think “wow, why did I not think of that???” I was wrestling with our rods just a few months ago and trying to figure out how to fix the ones the prior homeowner left. The last thing I wanted was extra expense but they came apart easily. Hubby fixed them with some plastic rings but he had to buy them. Your idea would have been faster, easier and less expensive! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Our problem was it’s a 3 piece rod and it separated and the curtains caught on it when we opened it. Solved the problem with black electrical tape.

  2. Thank you for this post! I was having this issue with some of my curtain rods. I was using unsightly duct tape to tape the rods in the middle. Ugly! I just tried your trick and it worked like a dream. Thanks for making my day!

  4. Genius genius genius! I put rubber bands both inside and outside of the brackets and that solved the issue. I can’t thank you enough! And thanks for being a vegetable rubber band saver too! God bless you!

  7. I love the idea, and wanted to support you by purchasing through the Amazon link, but looks like the product isn’t available anymore on Amazon. Sadness.

  8. You can get clear elastics of similar size in most Wal-Mart hair care departments.

  9. Hi I like your solution. I just want to verify how many rubber bands you used 2 or three and if three I know two are placed on the ends but where did you place the 3 one? If you can attach a picture that would be great and again thanks

  10. Thank you for this fix. Was so upset when curtain rod with curtain fell on my head. Very frustrating. I Couldn’t find any other fix for this. So I consider this a genius resolution!

These curtains are hard enough to hang because I’m short and need the help of another person, who is taller than me.
