Decoupaged Shelf

One of the easiest ways to alter furniture in a matter of hours is to use decoupage. I like to use a combination of decoupage and paint to make a shabby chic style piece – the paint can cover up any mistakes, which is always a bonus!

I purchased this handmade shelf about 10 years from eBay. It was unfinished and I had never been able to commit to a paint style so I never did anything with it. A few months back, a lady had posted on Facebook that she was giving away a box of old sewing patterns so I arranged to pick them up. Everything for this shelf was starting to come together!

I decided to decoupage the shelf with the patterns and then add doilies to the shelves. I used acrylic paint for my craft room to add some details. Here’s how:

1.       Paint the back of the cabinet with acrylic paint. Be sure to get the paint into all the grooves and details.

2.      Apply decoupage medium to the outsides of the shelf and apply pieces of the patterns. Be careful to avoid oversaturating the tissue-like pattern paper because it will tear. Flatted ridges or bubbles by painting over with more decoupage medium.

3.      Sand the edges of the decoupaged areas to remove any bits of hanging pattern paper.

4.      Apply a top coat of acrylic paint to everything.
