Today is the 6th day of the Twelve Days of Christmas Crafts! This gift is super easy and great for parties. Kids love opening them up and the packages are completely reusable!
Here's how to make these sour cream style candy holders:
Cut a 12×12 Sheet of paper into four 6×6 pieces. I am using this cute paper form Imaginisce's newline because I love all the of the small cute images on it.
Apply Tape to one 6″ edge of each piece of paper and roll into a tube. Each 12×12 paper will yield 4 tubes. I like to use Crafty Power Tape by 3L Scrapbook Adhesives because it is easy to apply and holds better than anything else!
Next, flatten one end of the tube. Insert this end into the Bind-It-All machine and line up with the holes printed on the top of the machine to punch 5 holes.
Since the tube measures just under 3″, it is only possible to safely punch 5 holes into the tube. The Bind-It-All punches a hole every half inch so if we tried for 6 holes, we would get partial holes on the edges of the tube.
There are styles of this container where the ends are glued shut but they have to be ripped open and essentially destroyed to get at the goodies inside. The method of closure I am showing you, woven ribbon, allows the package to be opened neatly. It can then be folded and stored for reuse year after year.
Cut about 15″ of ribbon. Cut one end into a sharp point and insert through one of the holes on the end of the row of holes. Leave about 6″ of ribbon hanging from the end of the tube. Continue weaving, looping around the end of the tube each time, until all the holes have been woven shut.
Tie the two ribbon ends together into a bow to close the tube.
|
Repeat the hole punching process on the other end of the tube, flatting it perpendicular to the first end (east and west versus north and south). |
Fill the tube with goodies, such as chocolates, money, gift cards, or small gifts. Close with another 15″ piece of ribbon.
Create gift tags from packaging for stickers–Cut the packaging into 2.5″ x 4″ strips and then cut the corners off to make them into tags.
Ink the edges. Add a circle in a contrasting paper to the top of the tag for reinforcement. Add a ribbon and sticker and add to the candy holder.
These candy holders are great as favors, co-worker gifts, and to tie onto special gifts to double as a gift tag. Hope this project inspires you to put some of your scraps to work to create something easy yet thoughtful to give.
Happy Creating :)

What a fantastic idea! I’ve always wanted to make those types of candy holders, but had only seen them using a crimper. Now I can make them! Thanks for the great idea for the tags too :O)
So clever to use the packaging for tags! Have a Merry Christmas!
